We have failed miserably as stewards of this earth.

I weep.

I weep.

I weep as I look at these photographs taken by Washington Post photographers.  My heart physically hurts for the wildlife, the shores, the water, our earth.  The kingdom that lives above and below the waters, these fragile ecosystems of where life truly begins.  I weep.  (Click photos to enlarge)

I have no captions to give.  These photos say more then they should.  I look at these photos and the Bruce Springsteen song, "My City's in Ruins" plays over and over in my head.  If I was a creature of the sea, this would be my voice to the land world...my city's in ruins.

We have failed.  We are all to blame.  The oil industry in their quest for a source and a profit that did not plan for such a catastrophe.  The environmentalists, under their masks of righteous indignation and blind eyes to a modern worlds energy's requirements who forced the oil industry to seek the commodity in areas so far and deep that this was bound to happen.  Our governments who refuse to make common sense decisions that we all can benefit from.   To all the world's people with every one's demands for oil and oil based products...could we not find a middle ground?  Hollywood with their need to praise socialist dictators and other selective political causes and yet we hear no voices from them...your silence is deafening.  To the oil nations who use this commodity as a political tool for personal wealth and dictatorship.   What have we done...what have we done?
We are all to blame, shame on all of us.

I have kept this blog from being political because I so love the uniqueness of my visitors.  But I am angry and I hurt when I see the damage we have all done.

I have no answers at this time.  I am numb to what I see.

I'm aching too - and speechless, but I am not surprised. How much can we rape this earth, take - take - take - greed and selfishness, without consideration for the very globe we live on? This is what we have done - this is man's doing! I'm ashamed to be called a human being. Which other animal destroys it's own habitat? - except a virus or fungus maybe? Killing its own host is self destructive and we consider us the intelligent species? HA! Don't make me laugh!

I so agree. I keep posting my despair and people just scoff and say I worry too much. Some one needs to It's just disaster added upon disaster. I wish I could fix this mess. I wish I had the power. Praying is about all I can do right now and mourn the loss of our earth.

I heard someone say once that man is the only animal that fouls in it's own nest.
Dearest Sea Witch how can we be "unpolitical" in any venue when we see this? I have been heartbroken since it began, I couldn't really even post anything on my blog because my heart just wasn't into lightheartedness right now.
I pray and then I pray some more that God in His infinite wisdom will cause a miracle to happen, a mighty miracle for the innocent and they will be saved....and maybe I am just a very foolish woman.

I had intentionally avoided images of the ravaged wildlife, but when i saw the title of this post in my blogroll, I knew it was time to look.

I'm weeping with you. Wailing, actually, with a pain in my heart as if there is a stone there.

You're right, we're all to blame. I am ashamed.

I went into mourning the first day this tragedy started, knowing the horror ahead. And as I swam in the clear, calm Gulf recently---watching the porpoise surfacing farther out---I tried to burn the memory of it in my heart and mind--I'm so afraid it may never fully recover in my lifetime.
I spent most of my life in those waters---it makes me physically ill to think about it.

This is a very sad time for your country and the world. I am so sorry for what is happening to your beautiful land and our precious sea life. I have been sickened by this since the day it happened and I am praying they come to a solution very soon. So sad!

I understand what you mean about keeping from political however this is beyond that. It is a disaster. We can only hope the young of today will remember and be proactive to do better then what we have done.

Good Morning Dari,

I know. I have no words to express my feelings for this totally preventable disaster! I cannot fathom in my mind why there were no safety cut off valves installed in increments along that pipeline! THat would only make COMMON sense!! What does the word "safety" mean??

When I first saw the pic of that oil covered pelican, it tore my heart out!! I agree wholeheartedly with you and all the other commentors remarks. What kind of earth are we handing over to our children and grandchildren for them to live on? The earth is in turmoil like a woman in labor--floods, earthquakes, volcano eruptions!! What else can we expect?

Thanks for sharing your heart with us all about this disaster. I agree with everything you said! At this point it will take a miracle from Heaven to clean up Man's mess!!

I am right there with you. It makes me so incredibly sad. I sit and cry and then I just want to scream!!!!! I too try to keep my political views to myself because I love all my friends, but I can't help but wonder about oil companies, big money and the government all being in a conspiracy together. We will wipe out this beautiful earth and for what??? We all need to stand up and shout as loud as we can!!

and what makes it triple worse??? the fact that bp/exxon is repeating the nightmare it visited upon my island home only several short years ago...how can they possibly have an excuse for letting such a tragedy occur again?? kodiak's beaches, waters, and fisheries were and still are damaged from the exxon valdez - our economy has never fully bounced back. there is no quick and tidy clean up to this kind of situation.
so i thank you for your blog, and hope others will speak out as well. how many more times are we going to trust these foolish companies with our world??
i weep with you, and with everyone facing the hardships ahead of them.

As I sit here and scroll down the images in your post, tears are rolling down my face. Although I am no longer a "Christian", I can't help but think back to the fire and brimstone- the water turning like blood and the sky falling down- and I have to wonder how much longer our Mother can take all this... goddess forgive us...

This is a horrible tragedy, one that should never have happened. But I dont blame myself or people like you and others on here. It is big businesses fault and greed. And there are other forms of energy that can be used instead of oil but those in power refuse to use them cuz of their own greed. And how do we stop this? I havent a clue....but these people are fouling their own nests too, not just ours. Its sickening.

I am devastated. Humanity should hang it's head in collective shame. We have forgotten that the richness in our lives comes not from the dollars made by man but by mother nature. We only have this planet to call home and I am completely ashamed that humanity treats it like it's disposable. We take better care of our homes and lawns that we do out planet. I agree with you completely SeaWitch, we have failed miserably, and sadly I don't think that man will learn from this lesson.

I weep too. I think this is one issue on which we can all come together. My heart goes out to each of the sea creatures who is struggling to survive. Nothing can justify their plight.
